William Somerset Maugham, CH (January 25, – December 16, ) was an Englishplaywright, novelist, and short story writer.
He was one of the most popular authors of his era, and although he did not receive the same critical acclaim as did his modernist contemporaries with their more experimental prose styles, he was reputedly the highest paid of his profession during the s.[1] Maugham's modernism expressed itself not in his literary style, but in the themes of his stories, which demonstrated the disaffection of his characters with the modern world.
